Information about the Midland Highlanders -

Instruments

Really interesting information will be posted here about the band instruments- our mission, members instruments, students instruments, the history of bagpipes, the history of the drums, and all sorts of great stuff...

The instruments we play AND how to maintain them.

In order to make our sound unique in the pipeband world, we chose to go with reproduction style instruments from the 18th century. Both our bagpipes and our drums have the look of the same instruments made from a long time ago, which helps us give our music a flavor not matched by other pipe bands. The bagpipes in the band are a mix of styles some with the older "chalice" tops, and others have the late 18th century style tops. Our drums our tensioned not with shiny metal bolts, but with real rope made from the same type of fibers they used from 200 years ago. The natural construction of the drums help to give them a vibration, depth, and darkness which cannot be achieved by the modern pipe band drum.
