The Midland Highlanders
Drums and Drumming.
Really interesting information will be posted here about the band and it's drums - our drums, how to maintain them, tugging, exercises... lots of great stuff!!!
the power of the drum
The Great Highland Bagpipe and the Drums are the most at their most exciting when played together. We play rope tension drums only which gives our band a power and excitement other bands cannot match. We have had these drums made exclusively for us by a real craftsman to give our drums a sound which is unlike any other. By matching the timbre of the pipes, they help to enhance certain tonal qualities in the pipes giving our band a darker and lower tonal reminescent of an older, more enchanting pitch.
Drum hoops were customarily scarlet (sometimes called Spanish Red) in color and the shells were left natural or stained dark walnut. The tack work you see on the drum was used both for decoration and to reinforce the seam where the sections of shell would be overlapped. The tackwork around the vent hole was also used to strengthen the wood around the hole. Even the rope used on the drum is of the same type used 200 years ago.
Page to be updated soon!
Coming soon is about how to tension the drum and how to “tug” a rope tension drum to take up the slack in the ropes. Look for those pages in a week or so.
You can check out the information " about the band " in the QUICK JUMPS section, which explains who we are and why we're different from other pipe bands.
